16 things for which we're thankful: Rapt Media 2014 year in review

by Jen Bergen |

It's been an action-packed year here at Rapt Media. Some of our Rapt Media 2014 highlights include:

It seems like just yesterday that we were writing our year-in-review blog post and listing all the things for which we were thankful. Tis the season once again. Some of the Rapt Media “Raptors” took a few minutes to reflect on the past year. Below, we share some of our highlights from 2014.

Erika Trautman, CEO

This past year, Rapt Media hit some major milestones for which I am grateful. As interactive video continues to rise, I feel lucky that we get to work with some of the most innovative and creative people out there. Our customers and creative partners regularly delight and amaze me, and truly make all the hard work worthwhile.

We also closed venture capital with a fantastic firm, Boulder Ventures, and welcomed two new board members to our team. At every meeting, I am thankful to have such smart, tough, dedicated board members asking the hard questions, holding us to account, and rolling up their sleeves to help.

Last and certainly not least, our daughter started kindergarten, and I am grateful for the amazing journey watching a kiddo learn and grow. This fall’s highlight? Creative spelling: C-U-M-P-Y-O-O-D-R. Sound it out.

Cameron McCaddon, President and Co-Founder

I was inspired after reading last year's Thanksgiving blog post. I look at what we were celebrating last year, and it seems just a shadow of what we've accomplished and become since then. Yes, we've increased our market saturation. Yes, our product is more stable and feature-filled than ever. But, to me, what’s most impressive is that our team has doubled in size, we've attracted top-industry talent, and yet we still have been able to maintain a we're-all-one-family-working-toward-the-same-exciting-goals attitude. I love everyone I get to work with day in and day out, and I am incredibly thankful that so many remarkable people have agreed to join us on this wild ride. Happy Holidays all!

Hector Rodarte, QA Engineer

I'm thankful for the birth of my son Vincent in February. He's healthy and doing good. My wife and I were lucky to have great support from the Rapt team providing meals for us after Vincent was born. I'm also thankful for our move to a house in Longmont. We have lived in a condo since 2005, so to move into a house with more room is great for us and the boys. And the commute to work is shorter, too. Plus, we live by Left Hand Brewery, so it's a win-win.

Brannan McGill, VP Design

I’m most thankful that I get to spend every day working on a highly innovative product that offers unique design challenges for both the user interface around interactive video content creation, as well as the end viewers' experience.  There are so many uninspiring products that I could be working on, and this is not one of them.

Also, you can’t really beat the cool team culture that’s developed during the three years I’ve worked with Rapt Media. What started out as a lot of scrappy ideas thrown about by a handful of people – and a lot of trial and error – has bloomed into a great team dynamic as we’ve grown. It’s easy to take for granted, but, during times of reflection, I become keenly aware just how uniquely fortunate I am to work with such great people day after day on a truly amazing product.

Jennifer Burak, VP of Marketing

Where do I begin?! Three months ago, I made the cross-country trek with my family from New York City to Boulder, Colorado. People ask me how, after 23 years of living in NYC, I could make the move to Boulder, Hippie town USA? I tell them, "quality of life and the opportunity to join a vibrant, evolving culture of both entrepreneurs and adventurers!" There is a major shift going on in Boulder with the city having six times more high-tech startups per capita than the nation's average, according to an August 2013 study by the Kauffman Foundation – and twice as many per capita as runner-up San Jose-Sunnyvale in California. I am so thankful for the opportunity to join the Rapt Media team and live in Boulder with my family!

Justin Trautman, Systems Architect

I'm thankful to be working with the most awesome team of talented, driven, interactive video believers. I don't think there is anything this team can't achieve. And with the groundwork we've laid this year, I’m really excited to see what happens next year.

Diane Woodhouse, Sr. Project Manager

I’m thankful to have found a community of fellow storytelling enthusiasts that use an advanced technology which not only tells a story but also includes the viewer in the choices being made within that narrative. Leaving my job in Los Angeles a few years back, where I worked with top film/TV production teams, I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to continue pursuing my passion for production, storytelling, and killer videos. Cue Rapt Media. During my nine months at Rapt, it has not only been amazing to witness video creators immediately grasp the advantages of interactive video, but it’s also been inspiring to watch them as they plunge into the driver’s seat and speed down those content roads that are less traveled and desperately need exploration.

Caleb Hanson, VP of Product

This year has been about hard work and triumph, and about meeting difficult problems head-on and conquering them. I’m thankful to be part of a world-class team working to solve some very interesting puzzles, and I couldn’t ask for anything more. I feel very fortunate to live in a place as amazing as Boulder, to have a job I love, and to work with genuinely fun, interesting, and talented people. Most importantly, I’m thankful to have such an amazing wife and son to enjoy the journey with. Here’s to a great 2014 and hoping for an even better ‘15!

Jen Bergen, Content Marketing Manager

The best companies I’ve worked at all have one thing in common: the people – and the team at Rapt Media is no exception. Sure, I can wax poetic about our product and the virtues of interactive video (just check our recent post to see why interactive video is so critical in marketing now), but what I really love about my job is our amazing team. Each “Raptor" has a unique and interesting story – serving in the Israeli military, co-owning a kombucha company, and changing professions from dentistry to design are just a few examples. And while everyone comes from varying backgrounds, they’re all wickedly smart, sharp, and funny, and we all will work our butts off for a product we believe in – and for that, I am grateful.

Tin Nguyen, Web Designer

I am thankful for being part of the Rapt Media team, filled with bright, talented, and inspiring people. I am grateful to have taken the opportunity to move from NYC to Boulder, and to join this awesome startup. This past year has been an adventure, and I’m grateful everyday to have the space to rediscover myself as a designer.

Susan Keith Bleekman, VP Sales

I am thankful for the amazing clients with whom we have had the pleasure to work this year. Each client used our product in a unique way, demonstrating how powerful interactive video is as a tool for engagement and conversion. I’m also grateful for the incredible growth at Rapt Media this year, the joy of working on Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall, our wonderful new office, and our fun and talented team who bring such positive energy every day.

Hepp McCoy, Nerd/Development

Electricity. It's important, and I don’t take it for granted. Everyday I give thanks that it runs everything in our lives.

Emily Gold, Jr. Project Manager

I'm thankful to have had such an amazing experience at Startup Institute in Boston over the summer. I'm even more thankful that Startup Institute and Techstars connected me to Rapt Media – a place where I truly feel at home. The past three months have been immensely rewarding and I've had the opportunity to work closely with extremely talented people who I know will continue to teach me a great deal. Looking forward to bringing in the New Year with Rapt Media and our fantastic team!

Colin Trent, Sales Engineer

I have a ton to be thankful for this year. My wife and I welcomed our daughter into the world, left our careers in Chicago, and came to Denver to pursue more fulfilling work – all in one year! Now we’re doing that and couldn’t be happier. My short time at Rapt Media has been amazing. Not only do we have an awesome product, we have an awesome team! Everyday, I get to work alongside super talented, positive, high-energy people who are fully committed to each others’ success and to the success of Rapt Media.

Lauren Twele, Inbound Marketing Manager

I am oh so very thankful for my new career adventure at Rapt Media! I am grateful to be a part of a smart team, and work in a fun and dog-friendly office. Interactive video is the next generation of the Internet, and the impact that it will have on large and small brands alike is limitless. I cannot wait to be part of the next revolution of video. It will change the way we all consume content and make our purchase decisions.

Rachelle Shacter, Customer Success Advocate

I am thankful for the opportunity to work with such an intelligent, innovative, and hilarious team at Rapt Media. I am so excited for the things we'll get to accomplish as a team and working in Boulder is just a bonus!

And most importantly, we're thankful for you, the interactive video pioneers who support us and believe in the true value that interactivity brings to video. Happy Thanksgiving!
